How much of a pharmacy chain's sales is its own brand?
At Clicks it was 25.9% of sales in the year to 31 August 2025. The group's presentation puts private label and exclusive brands at R9.7bn, with 30.6% of front shop sales and 12.3% of pharmacy sales. The front shop is the part of the store outside dispensing.
Our own check agrees with the headline. R9.7bn divided by the R37,554m retail turnover on page 7 gives about 25.8%, and the 0.1 point gap is what rounding R9.7bn would produce. So the 25.9% is a share of retail sales, not of the whole group including its distribution business. That reading is ours, not the company's wording.
Is that figure about supplements?
No. The share covers the whole range that Clicks counts as private label or exclusive brand, not supplements alone. The report does not split vitamins or supplements out, so no one can read a supplement share from it, and this article does not offer one.
What the figure does show is the direction of a large pharmacy group's range, which is the context in which a supplement brand is stocked or not stocked. The report does not say who makes these products, and we do not say either.
Is the pharmacy own brand growing against other brands?
At Clicks, the company says so itself. Its presentation names a target of 35% of front shop sales in private label and exclusive brands, against 30.6% reported for the year. It also states that retail value growth was "impacted by lower inflation, a higher level of promotions and the continuing switch to private label", and that retail margin was driven by "strong growth in private label and supply chain efficiencies".
These are the company's statements about one group in one year. The switch to private label is one of three factors the company names, not the only one. They are not a forecast for any other chain or country, and they do not tell you how much a chain keeps on any single product.
For a brand owner the reading is practical. A chain that sets a target for its own brands is deciding how much of the shelf is left for everyone else's. Your product is then judged on the shelf next to a product the chain controls, so the parts you control (the carton, the documents, the range) have to hold up on their own.
What about Nahdi and the Gulf?
This article gives no Nahdi figures, because we have not read Nahdi's own releases. Figures for the Saudi pharmacy chain circulate in press summaries and search snippets, but we have not found them in a document we could open ourselves.
For the Gulf as a market, our Middle East page sets out the requirements we can source. Treat a South African chain's share as evidence about South Africa only.
How can a brand owner or distributor work with pharmacy own brands?
There are three routes, and each one costs something different. The table sets them side by side by what they ask of you in time, volume and risk, not in money.
| Route | What it means | What it costs you |
|---|---|---|
| Supply a chain under the chain's brand | The chain owns the brand and you make the product to its specification | Control: the brand is not yours. Volume: you order to the quantities a chain plans for. Whether a plant fits a chain's volumes is a question for an enquiry |
| Sell your own brand through a distributor | A distributor holds the stock and the retail relationships; your brand is on the pack | Margin: the distributor keeps a share of the chain. Dependence: your reach is its reach |
| Sell your own brand through shops of your own | You hold stock, set price and choose the range | Capital and time: stock, premises, and any licence your country asks for. Our reading, not a figure from the report |
None of the three needs a claim about what a product does for health, and none of them is a promise about what you will earn. The Clicks report gives the group's own numbers for one year and says nothing about what a brand owner or distributor would make.
What can a brand owner control on a shelf shared with a chain's own brand?
The pack, the formula, the documents and the speed of the first order. A chain's own brand is a product with a carton, a label and batch papers. Yours has the same parts, and they are where you decide.
We make food supplements under your brand as white label, from a formula already in production, or as private label, from a formula developed for you. Tablets, capsules and softgels can be sealed in blisters with a carton and lidding foil printed for your brand. A blister run with a printed carton starts from 2,000 cartons, at least 4,000 blisters, with production in 6 to 10 weeks. Each carton holds 1 to 4 blisters, and one blister holds one kind of tablet or capsule. Minimums for other formats are on minimum order quantity, and transport comes on top of production time.
Each batch comes with a Certificate of Analysis and specification. The plant is ISO 22000, GMP and HACCP certified, with GMP for food supplements, and registered with the US FDA as a food facility. Copies of the certificates with their numbers are sent on request. The blister packing page explains the format, and for distributors covers who registers a product in the country of sale: not us.
One limit is worth stating. A ready-made formula is not reserved for one client, so another brand may sell the same composition. If a chain's own brand and your product share a formula type, the carton and the service are what set yours apart.
What your situation decides
Each line shows what a choice removes and what it costs, in time, quantity or risk.
| Your situation | What it decides | What it costs you |
|---|---|---|
| You already sell through a distributor to pharmacies | The chain's own brand is a neighbour on the shelf, not a customer; your lever is the pack and the documents | Risk: you do not set shelf space. Time: any change to the carton means new artwork approved by you before print |
| A chain in your market could ask for its own brand | You are choosing between selling your brand and making the chain's | Control: the chain's brand is not yours. Volume: its quantities may not match a minimum order set for a brand owner; ask us in an enquiry |
| You are launching and want a blister on the shelf | The blister run has its own minimum and production time, separate from bottles | Quantity: 2,000 cartons, at least 4,000 blisters. Time: 6 to 10 weeks of production, transport on top |
| You need one product in several countries | Label language and mandatory text differ by country, and your importer confirms them | Time: artwork for each market approved before print. Risk: a carton built for one country may not meet another's rules |
Questions brand owners and distributors ask about pharmacy own brands
What share of Clicks sales is private label?
Clicks reports that private label and exclusive brands were 25.9% of sales in the year to 31 August 2025, worth R9.7bn. In its front shop the share was 30.6%, and in pharmacy 12.3%. These cover the whole range, not supplements alone.
Does Clicks say how much of its private label is supplements?
Not in the presentation we used. It reports the share for the front shop and for pharmacy, not for vitamins or supplements. Any supplement share quoted from this report would be an estimate, and this article does not make one.
What is Clicks aiming for in private label?
The company's presentation states a target of 35% of front shop sales in private label and exclusive brands. For the year to 31 August 2025 it reported 30.6%. The target covers one group in one market.
Is a pharmacy's own brand a threat to my supplement brand?
It competes for the same shelf, and the report shows a chain pushing its share up. Whether it threatens your brand depends on your market and your range. The parts you control are the carton, the documents and the speed of your first order.
Can a manufacturer make a supplement for a pharmacy's own brand?
A chain buying under its own brand is, for a manufacturer, a private label customer like any brand owner. Whether a plant fits a chain's volumes is a question for an enquiry. We do not describe chain contracts on this site, and we do not name who makes any chain's products.
Do you publish figures for Nahdi or Dis-Chem?
No. We have not read Nahdi's releases or Dis-Chem's annual report at source, and we give no figure we could not check ourselves. Where a company's own document shows a share, we will add it with the period and the company's definition.
What is the minimum order for a blister under my own brand?
A blister run with a carton printed for your brand starts from 2,000 cartons, at least 4,000 blisters, and takes 6 to 10 weeks to produce, transport on top. Each carton holds 1 to 4 blisters. The formula can be a ready-made one or your own.
Will another brand sell the same formula as mine?
It can, if you choose a ready-made formula, because that is not reserved for one client. A formula developed for your brand is the other route. In both cases your carton, lidding foil and service are your own, and we do not describe a formula as exclusive.
Do you register the product in the country where I sell it?
No. Registration is filed by the brand owner, your importer or a local applicant, depending on the country. We supply the printed carton and the batch documents the file draws on: a Certificate of Analysis and specification with each batch, and site certificate copies on request.
