What does 10:1 or 4:1 mean on a saw palmetto extract label?
The ratio states how much raw berry went into one part of extract. The single tablet carries 150 mg of a 10:1 extract; the capsule blend carries 200 mg of a 4:1 extract, printed as equivalent to 800 mg of saw palmetto. Your market's rules decide whether the carton shows the extract, the equivalent or both.
Two extracts of the same plant at different ratios are two formulas, and so is a tablet next to a capsule.
Can saw palmetto tablets and capsules go into a blister of any size?
Yes. A tablet, capsule or softgel of any size goes into a blister. The current tooling on the Uhlmann B 1240 takes six tablet sizes (ovals of 22 × 10, 20 × 9.5 and 16 × 8 mm, rounds of 13, 12 and 11 mm) and capsules of size 0 long, 0 and 00; if the size is outside that, a forming set is made for it. This holds for the 150 mg extract tablet as for the multivitamin tablet with plant extracts. A tablet and a capsule are two blisters, which can share a carton of 1 to 4. Which blister film suits saw palmetto tablets?
PVC, PVC/PVDC and cold-formed aluminium (alu-alu) are offered, and the film is confirmed in our reply once the formula and the unit size are known. The deciding points are moisture uptake of the formula and cavity depth.
On the Uhlmann B 1240 the cavity can be up to 24 mm deep in PVC and up to 10 mm in aluminium, so a tall tablet can fit one film and not the other. PVC/PVDC adds barrier to PVC, and alu-alu is the highest-barrier class of the three. Figures and sources: blister films.
How do I show the saw palmetto dose and the %NRV on the label?
Print the extract in milligrams per tablet or per daily portion, with the ratio. Saw palmetto has no nutrient reference value in Regulation (EU) No 1169/2011, Annex XIII, Part A, which lists vitamins and minerals, so the extract carries milligrams and no %NRV. The vitamins and minerals in a combination formula do carry one, as in the capsule blend: zinc 20 mg is 200% of the EU reference value of 10 mg.
The portion is the one your carton recommends for a day: the same tablet shows twice the figure on a carton that says two tablets. You approve the artwork before print.
Can I sell saw palmetto supplements in my country?
The authority of the country of sale sets the status of a plant extract and any limit per portion, and your importer confirms both before artwork is approved. In some markets a botanical extract is handled as a medicine; see supplement or medicine in Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya and South Africa. Blends with ginseng or ginkgo are checked ingredient by ingredient.
