Astaxanthin capsule or softgel: which goes into a blister?
Both go into blisters. Hard capsules (gelatine or vegan HPMC) and softgels are sealed on the Uhlmann B 1240, the same line that seals tablets. Any size goes in: if the unit is outside the current tooling, a forming set is made for it, and the time and price of that set are confirmed in our reply.
Tooling in place covers three capsule sizes and six tablet sizes: capsules of size 0 long, 0 and 00, ovals of 22 × 10, 20 × 9.5 and 16 × 8 mm, and rounds of 13, 12 and 11 mm. Which blister film suits astaxanthin capsules?
PVC, PVC/PVDC and cold-formed aluminium (alu-alu) are offered, and the film is confirmed in our reply once the formula and the unit size are known. Moisture uptake of the formula and the depth of the cavity decide it.
On the Uhlmann B 1240 the cavity can be up to 24 mm deep in PVC and up to 10 mm in aluminium, so a large capsule may suit one film and not the other. PVC/PVDC adds barrier to PVC, and alu-alu is the highest-barrier class of the three. Trying your own capsule in the film settles it; figures and sources are on blister films.
How do I declare astaxanthin on the label?
State astaxanthin in milligrams per daily portion, in the form the formula prints it. Astaxanthin has no nutrient reference value in Regulation (EU) No 1169/2011, which lists only vitamins and minerals, so no percentage appears next to the amount and the figure is the amount in the portion your carton recommends.
The listed formula prints "10%" together with the amount, so agree the wording with your importer before the artwork is approved. You approve the artwork before print.
Is astaxanthin allowed in food supplements in my target market, and at what level?

Each batch ships with a Certificate of Analysis and a specification. The carton shows the batch number, production date and expiry date, and shelf life is 24 months as standard. Copies of the site certificates (ISO 22000, GMP, HACCP; FDA registered), with numbers, go to clients on request.
